Tracheostomy Humidification

Tracheostomy humidifiers increase moisture from the air so spontaneously breathing patients whose upper airways are bypassed by a tracheostomy tube can breathe easier. The captured moisture allows the mucus to remain thin in the lungs and the trach tube making it comfortable for the patient to breathe. Providing high level performance heat and moisture exchange, humidifying heat exchangers exhibit low resistance to flow and high moisture output, which helps to minimize the overall loss of heat and moisture.

Humidifiers are small "nose-like" pieces of plastic that fits over tracheostomy opening.  Each end of the Humidifier is made up of several rows of thin filter paper. The filter paper picks up the moisture in the air when the patient exhales (breathes out).  Then, when the patient inhales (breathes in), the air passes through the Tracheostomy humidifier and picks up the moisture from the filter paper. This results in air that reaches the patient's lungs being humidified, an improvement from dry, harsh air often experienced from trach use.
