Mobility Problems & Products
The ability to walk around your home, neighborhood and community provides independence; the capacity to meet out own daily needs as well as participate in the community and enjoy leisure and social activities. Physical conditions that prevent mobility, whether temporary or permanent can rob us of even the most basic independence. Adaptive equipment, including mobility scooters can restore the independence lost by physical disabilities.
Mobility problems include the complete inability to walk, or may just be not having the strength or balance to walk a few hundred feet-the minimum needed to get around in shops, doctors’ offices or even your own home.
Some of the problems that can severely impede the ability to walk enough to maintain independence are:
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Arthritis
- Spina Bifida
- Spinal Injury
- Trauma
- Heart Disease
- Lung Disease (Emphysema)
- Para or Quadriplegia
- Stroke
- Muscular Dystrophy
- Cerebral Palsy
In some cases, ambulatory products such as canes, crutches, rollators, walkers, wheelchairs, electric mobility scooters or other assistive devices can provide enough stability and balance needed for trips to the grocery stores, a restaurant or to visit friends and family. When mobility problems are more severe, isolation becomes a real risk.
Numerous studies show that handicapped and elderly people who are more active and socially involved retain their independence and self-help skills longer that people with limited interpersonal contact.
If you having trouble walking enough to get around your home to perform activities of daily living, or cannot walk enough to do basic tasks like getting grocery or medications, talk to your healthcare team about adaptive equipment such as scooters to help you maintain your independence.
