Description

TED stockings (thromboembolism-deterrent stockings) are medical compression stockings used primarily to help prevent blood clots in the deep veins of the legs (DVT) when someone is temporarily less mobile.

How they work

TED stockings apply graduated pressure:

  • Tightest around the ankle
  • Gradually less pressure higher up the leg
  • This helps encourage blood to move back toward the heart rather than pooling in the lower legs.

When they're commonly used

They may be prescribed for people who:

  • Are recovering from surgery, especially orthopedic surgery
  • Are confined to bed or have significantly reduced mobility
  • Are hospitalized and temporarily unable to walk normally
  • Have certain conditions that increase the risk of venous blood clots

They are different from ordinary compression socks because TED stockings are specifically designed for thromboembolism prevention in patients with limited mobility.

Features:

  • Nylon
  • Circumferential Knit
  • Contoured Seamless Construction
  • Full-Foot with Inspection Toe
  • Latex-free
  • White
  • 1 pair

How to wear them

Generally:

  1. Put them on before getting out of bed, when leg swelling is lowest.
  2. Make sure the heel is positioned correctly.
  3. Smooth out wrinkles and folds.
  4. The stocking should lie flat without bunching or rolling.
  5. Wear them for the amount of time your healthcare professional recommends.

Important precautions

TED stockings should fit properly. Don't simply use a tighter size thinking it will work better. Excessive pressure or improper placement can cause skin or circulation problems.

Check your skin regularly for:

  • Redness or irritation
  • Blisters or sores
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Unusual swelling
  • Cold, pale, or bluish toes

If you develop sudden leg swelling or pain, chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing up blood, or unexplained rapid heartbeat, seek urgent medical attention because these can be signs of a blood clot or pulmonary embolism.

TED stockings vs. compression socks

A useful distinction:

TED stockings Compression socks
Primarily for clot prevention in people with reduced mobility Often used for swelling, venous insufficiency, varicose veins, travel, etc.
Commonly prescribed after surgery/hospitalization Often used routinely during daily activities
Usually lower compression Available in a wide range of compression strengths
Often worn while lying down/recovering Usually worn while upright and active
