A flange is the plastic ring in a two-piece ostomy system that connects the skin barrier and pouch. A floating flange allows you to put your fingers under the flange for support while attaching the pouch to the skin barrier. Barriers are resistant to liquid discharge and flat barriers are often used when the stoma protrudes from the abdomen and convex barriers are used when the stoma is flat against the skin, known as flush stomas.
