Bed sores, also known as pressure ulcers, develop when there is too much pressure on the skin. This condition is very common in bedridden people. These sores cause pain and discomfort, and often lead to infections, like meningitis, cellulitis and endocarditis. The shoulder blades, tailbone, elbows, heels and hips are the most common sites for skin ulceration because these areas contain little muscle and fat and remain in contact with the bedding.
When the body doesn’t get any movement, or adequate blood flow to the skin, bed sores happen. If you are currently on bed rest, there are several things you can do to prevent bed sores.
Change positions frequently
Keep skin clean and dry
Use pillows
Exercise
Pressure reduction pads and pumps move skin gently to reduce pressure and ultimately reduce frequency of bed sores, skin ulceration and infection.
